Claes Oldenburg is known for his sculptures of everyday objects. In Chicago, Batcolumn is a 97-foot high steel and aluminum baseball bat. The Swedish sculptor intended the original color to be red, but he did not want it to be associated with Calder’s Flamingo.  Batcolumn is a lattice style piece that was commissioned by the U.S. General Service Admission to execute sculpture under Arts in Architecture Program.
