Monument with Standing Beast

Jean Dubuffet

1984

The Monument with Standing Beast is a white sculpture with black thick lines that looks as if a doodle had become 3-dimensional. There are four elements that compose this sculpture – an animal, a tree, a portal, and an architectural form. The artist, Jean Dubuffet, is known for his unique non-painterly, graffiti-like paintings. He describes his sculpture as a “drawing that extends… into space.”
